Health & Medical
Medicare is a free or subsidised health system. Australia has reciprocal agreements with a number of countries including the UK.
Permanent residents and long term visa holders are entitled to Medicare once they have registered at a Medicare office. You should allow a week after arrival before registering, as your visa will need to have been validated & accessible to the Medicare staff to register your entitlement.

In an emergency, dial 000 free or 112 from a mobile phone. Ambulances in WA are not covered by Medicare and a charge will be made for their use. Driving Licenses Visitors may use their own Country’s Driving Licence for up to 12 months.
If you are taking up Permanent Residency you are not classed as a visitor and may only use your own Country’s Licence for up to 3 months of your date of arrival, during and before the expiry of 3 months you must apply for a Western Australian Driving Licence. Since January 2005 if you are the holder of a British Driving Licence you no longer have to take a computerised test and a Western Australian Licence will be issued on request with the payment of fees. www.dpi.wa.gov.au
Car Insurance & Road License Tax
All motor vehicles in WA are eligible for a Road Tax which is payable either 6 or 12 monthly. The fees are based on engine size and use. Third party injury insurance is included in the Road Tax fee and there is no legal requirement for any other insurance but it is sensible to take out third party or comprehensive insurance to cover any other accident damage or claim.

Eftpos Eftpos stands for Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale and is a system whereby you electronically transfer funds for the payment of goods at point of purchase, by your card being swiped and your PIN entered. Most credit cards can be used at the Eftos facility if you have activated your PIN. Education The school year starts in February and ends in December. It consists of 2 half years & 4 terms with a two week break between terms and an annual summer holiday from late December until early February (6 or 7 weeks). Ages 3-4 Kindergarten, 5 Pre-primary, 6-12 years 1-7 primary, 13-16 years 8-10 Senior High.
Students can leave school after year 10 with a Certificate of Completed Schooling or continue until 18 years 10-12 Senior High for higher qualifications.
